I'm sure you've seen kombucha all over social media, at the grocery store, and if you've been in to Frutta Bowls (we have it on tap & by the bottle). This powerful drink has become a total health craze that people are hopping on the bandwagon for without really even knowing WHY they are drinking it.
People typically refer to it as a drink for gut health. 80% of your immune system is located in in your gut. Your digestive system is the 2nd largest part of the neurological system. Therefore, the gut is referred to as our SECOND BRAIN. If your gut isn't healthy, your entire body feels the effects.
So what is this popular drink?
Kombucha is a fermented tea (usually black or green tea) mixed with sugar and a live "culture" (beneficial bacteria for your gut) when it's brewed. The drink ferments over a certain period of time and it's finished once the sugar has been converted into healthy bacteria. The typical taste is slightly sweet but also somewhat acidic (like a hint of apple cider vinegar). The flavor varies depending on the type of kombucha you buy, as does the carbonation it contains. Some are more carbonated than others. There is the acidic taste because it contains a helpful acetic acid that aids in weight loss.
What are the benefits?
-Contains acetic acid which has been shown to have beneficial effects on blood sugar, insulin levels, and body composition (all important factors in weight loss and fat mass)
-Contains antioxidants which can help to detoxify the body and protect against disease
-Antioxidants help fight inflammation
-High levels of beneficial acid, probiotics, amino acids and enzymes
-Helps heal candida by restoring balance to digestive system
-Live probiotic cultures help repopulate the gut's good bacteria
-High Vitamin B12 content which can increase energy levels
-Can improve anxiety/depression by healing & improving the gut/brain connection
-Antioxidants can help alleviate diabetes symptoms
Where to buy?
You can find Kombucha in the cold drink section and/or the organic aisle at most grocery stores anymore. A bottle is typically $3-6.
A lot of farms sell it as well or provide it as part of a CSA share.
Our business, Frutta Bowls, in Quakertown sells Sole Kombucha on tap and by the bottle. This is my FAVORITE brand by far. It's brewed local in Dublin, PA. The flavor is amazing and it is a "softer" kombucha with less vinegar taste. Great one for kombucha newbies to try!
Some people even use it as a healthier substitute for soda because it has a fizz to it, similar to soda. There are even some soda-flavored varieties, just be mindful of the quality you are choosing.
Never tried Kombucha? Don't be afraid! Try something new. It's definitely an acquired taste and you may not LOVE it the first time, but trying different flavors helps you find what you like best!
